In a 40 year career at the Foreign Officer, Edward Chaplin has served across Europe and the Middle East. In the mid 1980s he served as Head of Chancery in Tehran. Subsequently he has been Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department as well as Ambassador to Jordan, Iraq and Italy. With the Iranian elections fast approaching, Mr Chaplin will address us on the topic “Iran and the West: Will a new President make a difference?” This promises to be fascinating insight both into Iran’s internal politics as well as the prospects of resolving the ongoing stand-off over Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

The department’s photography competition received over 130 submissions from 35 students. The exhibition will feature the nine shortlisted images selected by a panel of judges, and there will also be a silent auction of donated anthropological books. Exhibition organized by Visual, Material, and Museum Anthropology postgraduates Maria Cury and Alejandra Blohm.

Here's a poem to finish the email, as suggested by Claire Moryan. (Keep sending me poems and quotes, guys!! You don't want it always coming from me, do ya?!)

Let us live, my Lesbia, and love.
As for all the rumors of those stern old men,
Let us value them at a mere penny.
Suns may set and yet rise again, but
Us, with our brief light, can set but once.
One never-ending night must be slept.
Give me a thousand kisses, then a hundred.
Then, another thousand, and a second hundred.
Then, yet another thousand, and a hundred.
Then, when we have counted up many thousands,
Let us shake the abacus,[3] so that no one may know the number,
And become jealous when they see
How many kisses we have shared.

Vivamus mea Lesbia, atque amemus,
rumoresque senum severiorum
omnes unius aestimemus assis!
soles occidere et redire possunt:
nobis cum semel occidit brevis lux,
nox est perpetua una dormienda.
da mi basia mille, deinde centum,
dein mille altera, dein secunda centum,
deinde usque altera mille, deinde centum.
dein, cum milia multa fecerimus,
conturbabimus illa, ne sciamus,
aut ne quis malus inuidere possit,
cum tantum sciat esse basiorum.

Call for MCR officer nominations!

Dear Kelloggians,

I hope this email finds you well!

On Monday, former MCR President and Returning Officer Amanda Shriwise will be releasing a call for nominations for the MCR Committee 2013-14. All positions are open for election, and we would love for you to consider becoming involved in the Committee.

To this end, I have attached a guide on how people can become involved in the MCR Committee. It has a full run through and break down of all of the positions, as well as some pointers as to what you could gain from the experience. I really hope that this document is useful for any of you interested in investing into our community.

It's hard to believe that my time as your President is drawing to a close! Whilst this is certainly not the last email you will receive from me (I'm afraid!!), it does seem like an opportune time to thank you all so much for your support during this past year. I hope that I have made a positive difference to life at Kellogg, and I would like to thank you all most sincerely for helping to make our college such a wonderful place to work and study.

I would also like to thank all of our committee members who have this year been such a support to me and who have worked hard for the Common Room, and to the members of staff who have consistently endorsed student endeavours.

With warmest wishes and many thanks,
Harriet
